Sonja van Wier in Palestina/Israël
Dianne
Opvallend bescheiden.
Wed. January 7, 2004 - I went to U.S.Embassy today. OK. I'm back in the real world again, where I realize the Demons of Global Capitalisme own the world. Unless it personally benefits them, no amount of suffering matters! There is money and power driving this situation here. People are important only as cannon fodder. As an American woman I live in the belly of the beast spewing out guns, and bombs, and Weapons of Mass destruction. If Americans only knew, but they don't, they are to busy consuming. How long will it go on? As long as there is something to control, something to destroy.
The advice of the man we meet with today, was to try to influence congress. I come from a long line of leftiest activists that have tried to influence. As long as we protest and remain in the streets they tolerate us. If we grow too powerful or get a good leader, they kill us.
Oh, Americans why are you asleep at the wheel! The only thing that will wake you up is when your pocket book feels the crunch. I pray for the day when unstrained capitalism will run its course. By then the world will be polluted and the suffering will touch us all. Perhaps then, the light will have a chance to pierce the darkness of these men.
And here we are, the International Human Rights March of Women to Palestine and Israel. We have seen the real situation and I know that all of us have been deeply touched. Unemployment, hunger, barbed wire, roadblocks, the ghetto walls, lack of movement, and power and peace. And what bothers me personally, the most, is that te Jews, who have suffered for 1000's of years, existing in a racist world, are now, in there own little country, persecuting the Arabs. Perhaps it is just like an abused child who grows up to become the abuser. Now, the Palestinians are the under dog. If they had the power would they then act the same? Probably! Men are men. And power corrupts.
Still, we will al go home and talk to our governments, and give talks, and write articles, and show our pictures and try to influence others. It's all we can do. It's what we must do, whether it helps or not, we must try, because we are women of conscience and we have witnessed. Women bear children and care for them. Men bear arms and seek power.
We must try and remain true to the truth, and keep on, even if we can't win. It makes no difference, we are on the right side and we suffer with and for the world.
Thank you, Mr. Low level State Department Human Rights Official. Like you said, it is my job to carry out the policies of the government. To do less woud be mutiny. He follows a line, I follow a circle.
